Risk factors in infertile men with sperm DNA fragmentation
Keywords:
male infertility, DNA fragmentation, risk factors.Abstract
Introduction: Male factors are involved in approximately 50% of the cases that received medical attention for infertility. Among the causes of functional competition of sperm is the integrity of sperm DNA.
Objective: To identify genetic and non-genetic factors that influence the sperm DNA fragmentation index.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in 52 infertile men who attended a clinical genetics consultation at the Provincial Center of Medical Genetics in Mayabeque, between January 2016 and December 2018. The medical records of patients with fragmentation of the Elevated sperm DNA (≥ 22%) were classified according to the magnitude of the fragmentation, and genetic and non-genetic risk factors were identified. Results: In the groups of 40 - 49 years and over 50 years DNA fragmentation rates ≥ 40% (76.92% and 71.43%, respectively) were more frequent. Predominate rates between 30-39% in errors related to alcoholic beverages (55.56%), heat (42.86%) and pesticides (63.64%). Indices ≥ 40% predominate in patients with smoking (66.67%), work-related X-ray problems (100%) and with a history of first-degree reproductive failure (80%). In diabetic (75%), hypertensive (63.64%) and bilateral varicocele (75%) patients, DNA fragmentation ≥ 40% also predominated. Conclusions: Infertile patients over 40 years of age, factors related to gonadotoxic factors, chronic non-communicable diseases and a history of first-degree reproductive failure have DNA fragmentation frequencies of ≥ 40%.
